Abstract

Besides overall density, the distribution of the synapses over the axonal tree can also be studied in Golgi preparations by observing the localization of the axonal swellings or boutons. This was an interesting issue for us, because on the one hand we favour the view of a diffuse network of synaptic contacts between axons and dendrites, implying a homogeneous distribution of the synapses over the whole axonal tree, while on the other hand the results summarized in Fig. 21 seemed to indicate a more preferential localization of the synapses.
