Abstract
A generalized dielectric function must consider all types of excitations which can occur in a solid. Since we will discuss in the following chapters not only excitations by electromagnetic radiation, a description is needed which goes beyond the electromagnetic response. The description will still be phenomenological as a general formulation of the linear response theory is beyond the frame of this textbook. However, some fundamental concepts of the latter are summarized in Appendices L.1 to L.5. More details can be found in special textbooks like [14.1].
