Abstract
The appearance of a yeast cell is not exciting. The noted authority on yeast cytology, C.F. Robinow (Robinow and Johnson 1991), has said of the yeast cell wall and the underlying plasmalemma that “Yeasts seem drab and featureless, and are clothed more for respectability than for beauty”. Nevertheless, Robinow has filled more than 100 pages on the cytology of yeasts. If Robinow finds the cytology and ultrastructure of yeasts interesting, others will also. We cannot, here, go into the same amount of detail as Robinow, nor clothe them in such entrancing language. We can only summarize the present knowledge of the structure of the yeast cell, and recommend that the interested reader then consult Robinow’s writings, both for the more detailed information within them, and for the incomparable enjoyment of the language in which it is described.
