Abstract

The basic structural units of transition element oxides are an MO6 octahedron and an MO4 tetrahedron which are shown in Fig. 2.1. The metal-d orbitals (M d ) overlap with the ligand 2 p orbitals (O2 p ) forming molecular orbitals.
