Spirituality in Higher Education: What Do Students Think?

Abstract

Spirituality today denotes above all access to a person in their totality, beyond a system of beliefs. Rudolf Steiner considers the role of art and aesthetics in education, in addition to the value of human self-education in the development of spirituality. This study aims to comprehend what pedagogy course students at a federal university in Brazil understand by spirituality and its relationship with higher education. It is a qualitative exploratory study applying thematic content analysis based on a phenomenological approach. The conclusion is reached that there is indeed room in higher education for the inclusion of spiritual development that enables a person to connect better with herself and with the world, thus enhancing the connection between objectivity and subjectivity in her life.
