Cinzano et al. (2001) veranschaulichen, mit welcher Intensität die Nächte mit Kunstlicht aufgehellt werden.
In ihrer Studie wurden zwischen 1996 und 1997 achtundzwanzig Fotos von der Erde erstellt und zu einer Landkarte zusammengefügt. Die Aufnahmen wurden von Störfaktoren wie Überbelichtung, Bränden oder nicht klarer Atmosphäre bereinigt, sodass im Endresultat lediglich himmelfreie Bilder mit klarer Atmosphäre verarbeitet wurden (Abb. 3.1).

Die Aufnahmen wurden mithilfe eines Satelliten und einer speziellen Kamera geschossen. Die spektrale Aufnahmefähigkeit dieser Kamera lag zwischen 440–940 nm. In den Bereichen zwischen 500–650 nm verfügte sie über eine besonders hohe Empfindlichkeit. Dies kam den Aufnahmen besonders zugute, da die damals gängigen Straßenleuchten Spektren zwischen 545 nm und 630 nm besaßen (Quecksilberdampflampe: 545 nm und 575 nm, Natriumdampf-Hochdrucklampe: 540–630 nm, Natriumdampf-Niederdrucklampe: 589) (vgl. Cinzano et al. 2001, S. 690).
