Diese Überlegungen sind gut mit Professionstheorien vereinbar, die Professionen als dritte Form der Regulation neben Markt und Staat begreifen (Freidson 2001). Auch hebt Bourdieu hervor, dass sich die Regeln feldspezifischer Spiele stetig wandeln. Durch beide Argumente eröffnet die Bourdieu’sche Theorie eine transnationale Perspektive (Bongaerts 2008), die jedoch noch auszuformulieren wäre.

Einen ähnlichen Gedanken hat Esser ohne Referenz auf Bourdieu humankapitaltheoretisch ausformuliert: Er unterscheidet zwischen Interessen‑ und Kontrollkonflikten. Erstere betreffen Ressourcen, deren Nutzen von der Geltung einer bestimmten Ordnung (also Verfassung oder Konstitution) abhängig ist. Ändert sich diese Ordnung, so verliert die Ressource ihren Wert oder verkehrt sich sogar zu einer Belastung: „Wer sonst nichts hat als das verfassungsabhängige spezifische Kapital, etwa einer Hautfarbe, eines Geschlechts oder einer Karriere im jeweiligen Regime, der tut alles dafür, dass sich die Verhältnisse nicht ändern“ (Esser 1999, S. 152).

Pries hebt hervor, dass nur dann von „globalen“ Phänomenen die Rede sein sollte, wenn diese sich unterschiedslos über den Globus erstrecken. Von Transnationalisierung will er sprechen, wenn mehrere Orte grenzüberschreitend verbunden sind. „Transnationalisierung ist demzufolge ein (…) sich ausweitender und vertiefender Prozess. Transnationalisierung führt zur Herausbildung relativ dauerhafter und dichter pluri‐lokaler und nationalstaatliche Grenzen überschreitender Verflechtungsbeziehungen von sozialen Praktiken, Symbolsystemen und Artefakten“ (Pries 2008, S. 165 f.).
