Abstract
In 1950 the State Administration of Cultural Heritage started to plan a National Museum of Chinese Revolution and elected a committee to collect materials and documents relating to Chinese history of the previous hundred years (1950a). The oil painter Dong Xiwen was selected along with other artists to create works that commemorated significant events in the Communist Party’s history to complement the displays in the museum. The theme assigned to Dong was the founding ceremony of the People’s Republic of China, which had taken place in Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square on October 1, 1949.
