Abstract

Located on the south eastern corner of the continent, the relations of Turkey with Europe have always been contentious. It was through the loss of territories incurred by the Ottomans that Europe and its Ottoman neighbors began for the first time to establish inter-cultural relations, and the Ottoman regime had admitted some limited Westernization as early as the beginning of the 18th century. After the republican revolution adopted wholesale Westernized policies, Turkey became part of many Western/European-based economic, political, military, sporting and cultural transnational organizations in the 20th century.
