Zusammenfassung

Ha cambiado en nuestros días el modo en que se entienden la salud y la enfermedad. Durante siglos, incluso durante milenios, la humanidad vivió a merced de los más diversos agentes patógenos, de las inclemencias meteorológicas y de una naturaleza hostil o, cuando menos, indómita, por no hablar de los peligros emanados de los propios congéneres. La mortalidad infantil era muy elevada y la esperanza de vida, más bien corta. La existencia estaba frecuentemente amenazada, de modo que sobrevivir era una suerte, un regalo de los dioses o del destino.
