Abstract

Sustainability and the inherent concept of the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) (Elkington, 1998) advanced to an omnipresent topic among academics and business leaders (cf. Carter and Easton, 2011; Conelly et al., 2010; Seuring and Mueller, 2008). In its broader definition sustainability is referred to as „development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987), while the derived concept of the TBL is based on the notion that companies should not only focus on purely economic value, but that they should also seek to deliver environmental and social benefits (Elkington, 1998).
