Nach aktuellen Schätzungen der Weltgesundheitsorganisation ist Lungenkrebs weltweit die häufigste Krebstodesursache bei Männern und die zweithäufigste bei Frauen [Ferlay et al. 2010]. Im Jahr 2008 starben weltweit etwa 1.4 Millionen Menschen an Lungenkrebs.
