Abstract

Stochastic processes are widespread in optics. Whenever an optical signal exists, if there is some uncertainty in knowing exactly which signal is present it may be regarded as a stochastic process. The signals may exist in space, time, or frequency. Examples are spatial photographic images, photon pulse shapes in time due to multipath propagation through clouds, and the MTF characteristics of emulsions. Even the income distribution of attendees at the coming Optical Society meeting is a stochastic process. The uncertainty in choice of signal ultimately lies in the choice of some parameters λ peculiar to the signal, as described next.
