Abstract

The task of preparing, in a relatively short time, the manuscript and the figures of a book covering so many fields of biology would have been impossible without the facilities available at the University of Brussels. My warmest thanks go to my secretary, Mrs. D. Libert, who not only typed the final manuscript, but also checked my text for inaccuracies or repetitions, and helped considerably in the preparation of the lists of references. Throughout two years, while performing all the menial jobs of secretary of the Laboratory of Pathology, she remained helpful and smiling, although the number of folders was increasing, and many last-minute changes were necessary. Without her activity, it would have been impossible to meet the deadline imposed by the publisher.
