Abstract

The field of child and adolescent psychiatry covers diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of psychiatric disturbances in children and adolescents from birth up to the age of eighteen. Child and adolescent psychiatry is not a separate specialism but a super specialism. This means that the postgraduate training for child psychiatrists takes a total of 5 ½ years; 3 ½ years being devoted to general psychiatry and two years to child and adolescent psychiatry. Training is given only in recognized training centers. These centers are inspected every five years by a visitation committee that monitors the standards of training.
