Abstract

Advances in our knowledge of the lymphatic system coincided largely with those of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the human body. That animals have lymphatics was known already in antiquity. As early as 400 B. C. Hippocrates spoke of “the white blood” and Aristoteles described “tubules with uncoloured fluid”. The Alexandrian school was the first to describe lymphatics in human beings. By that time it was no longer forbidden to carry out examinations on cadavers. Research workers were therefore able to make valuable contributions to our knowledge of human anatomy. They also discovered the lacteals, which they called, ductus lactei. Unfortunately, however, these contributions soon fell into oblivion.
