Shorelines of Weak Tidal Activity: Upper Devonian Catskill Formation, Central Pennsylvania

Tidal Deposits

Abstract

A common expectation among stratigraphers is to find tidal deposits where marine strata merge with nonmarine strata, either in laterally or vertically exposed sequences. This expectation would seem especially well founded where the marine to nonmarine transition occurs in mud-rich sediments. However, we see no evidence of significant thicknesses of intertidal deposits in a part of the Upper Devonian Catskill Formation, which is dominantly muddy and contains more than 20 marinenonmarine regressive sequences (Walker and Harms, 1971). Although the regional setting would appear favorable for extensive tidal-flat development (and these sediments have been interpreted as tidal deposits) (Allen and Friend, 1968), no features of these sediments suggest periodic flood and ebb of tides.
