Lower Jurassic Tidal-Flat Deposits, Bornholm, Denmark

Tidal Deposits

Abstract

The top of Gry’s (1960) Lower Coal Series (Lias α-ß) is well exposed in the Galgeløkke cliff section south of Rønne on the island of Bornholm. The Lower Coal Series (35 meters) consists of predominantly coarse-grain fluvial sandstones with subordinate coals overlaying the red marls of the Trias. The Coal Series is itself overlain by the ferruginous Hasle Sandstone (80 to 100 meters), which in places contains a marine fauna indicating a Lower Pliensbachian age. The sediments interpreted by Sellwood (1972a) as having a tidal-flat origin occur toward the top of the Lower Coal Series and represent a transitional facies between the fluvial sediments below and the marine sandstone above.
