Abstract

During the past twenty years many new papers on spilite-keratophyre occurrences have appeared. Except for some emphasis on secondary processes of alterations and some interesting papers on new occurrences of primary textures, very little new evidence was added to the previous work by BENSON (1915), P.A. NIGGLI (1952; BURRI and NIGGLI, 1945) and others. A new examination of the Glarus spilites and keratophyres may provide refined criteria on the mode of formation of spilites. Not only the textures which we consider to be primary magmatic, but also the existing clear transitions to rock portions which show secondary features, support the original interpretation of an essentially primary hydromagmatic origin of the spilites in this area.
