Spilites and Spilitic Rocks

Part of the book series: International Union of Geological Sciences ((2817,volume 4))

Abstract

An examination of the geological map of Finland (Fig. 1) shows that in eastern and northern Finland the basic effusives and intrusives are extensively distributed over the Karelian schist zone. Both the intrusives and effusives vary in composition from ultra-basic to basic. Among the basic rocks, spilites, i.e. rocks with albitic plagioclase, abound. Since both a volcanic and a hypabyssic milieu is exposed here, these rocks provide abundant material for studying the spilite dilemma. Consequently, spilites have twice been strongly to the fore in the course of geologic investigations in Finland; the first time was at the beginning of this century and the second in the 1960’s.
