Zusammenfassung

Unter Epidemiologie wird weithin die Lehre von den Epidemien, den großen Wellen der Ausbreitung von Infektionskrankheiten verstanden. Diese Auffassung trifft weder für den Ursprung des Begriffs, noch für seine volle Bedeutung in der Gegenwart zu. Sie erfährt lediglich eine pragmatische Rechtfertigung an der Tatsache, daß die Epidemiologie als Wissenschaft und als Grundlage medizinischer und politischer Maßnahmen in der Bekämpfung der Infektionskrankheiten ihre bisher größten Erfolge errungen hat. Das eindrucksvollste Beispiel aus dem letzten Jahrhundert ist die Aufklärung der Verbreitung und die darauf gründende erfolgreiche Bekämpfung der Cholera.
