Abstract
The variety of organic “dyes” available to cover the spectrum and the broad tunability of each particular dye make the dye laser a versatile research tool. The ultimate utility of these lasers will depend in large measure upon the properties of the dyes available. Absorption by the relaxed lowest excited singlet state, that is, by the upper level of the laser transition, is one of the most important parameters determining the suitability of a molecule as a gain medium [1,2].
