Abstract
Just as mutation is the consequence of a mistake in DNA replication, gene duplication also arises as an infrequent mistake in mitotic as well as meiotic processes. Duplication which involves a single cistron or a cluster of cistrons on one linkage group is dealt with in this chapter. This mode of gene duplication can be contrasted with the simultaneous duplication of all linkage groups due to polyploidy (to be dealt with in a later chapter).
