Zusammenfassung

In den letzten 10 Jahren ist das Interesse am Schlaf und seinen Mechanismen enorm gestiegen. Seit 1958 (Dement 1958; Jouvet et al. 1959) ist es bekannt, daß der Schlaf kein einheitliches Phänomen ist, sondern daß man mit polygraphischen Kriterien zwei Komponenten differenzieren kann, die bei gewöhnlichem Schlafverhalten periodisch ablaufen: Den orthodoxen Schlaf mit langsamer bioelektrischer Rindentätigkeit (slow wave sleep) und den paradoxen Schlaf mit schneller Kortexaktivität und raschen Augenbewegungen (Rapid Eye Movements Sleep = REM-Sleep), der enge Beziehungen zur Traumaktivität beim Menschen zeigt.
