Abstract

Of the innumerable specializations for attachment which the living world has evolved, nearly every type has been at least mentioned here, though in each case with only a few particularly compelling examples. The major omission in this guided tour, as admitted at the outset, is a survey of the joints of animals. Although it is possible in principle to classify the joints according to the notions of bioengineering, one who undertakes this task can expect to be inundated with a superabundance of structural designs. Even a moderately comprehensive summary would by itself fill another book.
