Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Interstitial stereotactic brain tumor therapy is the field of research in a cooperative project between the Department for Biophysics and Medical Radiation Physics at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and the Department of Stereotactic Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Cologne. As a part of this project, the use of hyperthermia to enhance the effects of radiotherapy is being investigated. In brain tumor therapy the number of applicators has to be as small as possible; thus microwave antennas are the most suitable applicators, as has been shown by comparative calculations (Strohbehn and Mechling 1986).
