Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of the surface structure and bonding of tetrahedrally coordinated compound semiconductors and to introduce the theoretical concepts and constructs which have emerged to give a quantitative, predictive description of experimental measurements on these materials. The article is introductory in character, building on comprehensive recently published reviews of both zincblende [7.1,2] and wurtzite [7.2,3] structure materials. Moreover, only the results of measurements and theoretical models are considered. Descriptions of the experimental techniques and model calculations may be found in the literature cited.
