Abstract
In the present chapter, we shall modify Shannon theory in order to account for symbols and meanings. The approach is based upon two main ideas: first, we describe the space of symbols and the space of meanings by means of two probability distributions; and second, we slightly modify the Shannonian concept of transinformation to introduce some references to semantics in the information transmission from sender to receiver.
