Abstract
Modern dialysis treatment for terminal renal failure enables long-term survival in a majority of patients. In the wake of the early reports of Winearls and Eschbach [1, 2] on the effectiveness of recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEpo) in the treatment of renal anemia in patients on chronic hemodialysis, the widespread use of this exciting treatment can be expected shortly. However, because of the high treatment costs, attention is beginning to be focused on the impact that partial correction of anemia will have on dialysis therapy in general. The major issue is certainly the potential improvement of quality of life.
