Abstract

The theory, or rather the theories, reviewed in this book have achieved for the sp-bonded metals and alloys the ambitious goal we stated so boldly in the title. At least in favourable cases, it is now possible to set out with the Hamiltonian of a system of electrons and ions and to compute a phase diagram in good agreement with experiment using methods which are essentially rigorous and developed from first principles. In other cases where this is not yet possible, the theory provides at least a basis for phenomenological models with a minimum number of adjustable parameters.
