Approximation Methods Used in the Exchange of Geometric Information via the VDA/VDMA Surface Interface

Product Data Interfaces in CAD/CAM Applications

Abstract

The exchange of geometric information between different CAD systems has become a matter of increasing practical importance. Many industrial organizations are using several CAD modelling systems side by side or exchanging geometric data with their vendors and subcontractors. Thus the data need to be converted from one representation to another because each modelling system has its own distinct type of internal geometry representation. The most effective approach to communication between several heterogeneous CAD systems is based on providing a neutral external representation of the geometric model, that is, a standardized form of modeller interface.
