In vitro Interactions Between Tumor Cells and Immune Lymphoid Cells

  • Chapter
Lymphocytes, Macrophages, and Cancer

Abstract

In the past 6 years after the very important initial contribution of HELLSTRÖM (11), about 100 papers have been published, reporting the existence of tumor-specific, cell-mediated immune reactions (CMIR) in man. Now, in the last 2 years, several groups have clearly demonstrated that most, and perhaps all, of these results are not related to the anti-tumor response, since they also exist in controls at the same level and with the same frequency (3, 5, 20, 29). In fact, no attention has been given to the nature of the effector cell or to their specificity in many of the experiments reported. Perhaps it is useful to return to clear experimental models to try to etablish the significance of the in vitro methods used in investigations on cell-mediated antitumor immunity, and to determine whether the anti-tumor immune response is actually a response against the tumor or in fact an intercurrent phenomenon.
