Abstract
The remarkable progress in the control of cancer therapy-related emesis that we have witnessed over the past few years is well reflected in this monograph. At present, in adults submitted to highly emetogenic chemotherapy, nausea and vomiting should be a rare event in the first 24 hours of observation, with only 5% or less of the patients failing antiemetic therapy completely (more than 5 episodes of emesis), and over 60% fully protected from both nausea and vomiting. However, these figures conceal the reality: if one looks at the whole experience of the patient and includes the later days after chemotherapy in the observation period, the results are clearly not as favourable.
