Abstract
It has long since been established that cancer and its treatment can be a source of great distress for patients and their families. The time of diagnosis, as Greer remarked, is often viewed as a “catastrophic threat tantamount to a death sentence” [1]. Treatment is usually commenced soon after diagnosis and patients are then faced with the fear of death and the possible side-effects of treatment. While some patients are able to take the possibility of death stoically, many find the side-effects of treatment intolerable.
