Abstract

Sepsis is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients [1], The number of cases of this lethal syndrome is increasing as more patients are immunosuppressed, treated with invasive techniques, and bacteria have become refractory to antibiotics [2, 3]. In the US, more than 400000 cases of sepsis are reported each year, and 50% of these patients die during their course of illness [1]. Death occurs mostly within 24 h after diagnosis and is the result of persistent hypotension.
