Abstract
Interesting seismic activity occurred before, during and after the 1982 paroxysmal explosions of the El Chichon volcano in southeastern Mexico. The first eruption was preceded by a large amount of seismic energy released (1019ergs). Periodical increments (6–7 days) in the seismic energy released were observed, the same period separated the first from the second and third eruptions. The majority of events prior to eruptions were at intermediate to superficial depth.
b-Value variations were observed, maximum value was reached during the period between the first and the second third eruptions, this aspect was probably related to an intense shallow fracturing process.
During the 48 h before eruptions, seismic signals probably related to shallow explosions were detected. Location of the seismic events post eruptions revealed the probable location of the magmatic reservoir.
