Abstract

Data from the seismic network of the Aeolian Islands (January 1978–June 1988) show that both regional faulting earthquakes and shocks related to fluid dynamics at Vulcano volcano, are characterized by higher levels of activity at the start and end of the time interval investigated. In spite of this analogy, the hypothesis of a strict relationship between the two classes of events is not, at the present stage of the investigation, supported by shorter-term analyses, such as comparisons of the most relevant peaks of activity in the frame of the two different processes. Possible cause-effect relationships could, however, be masked by intrinsic complexities of the same phenomena and by the large number of factors and parameters involved in their occurrence. On the other hand, both tectonic and volcanic earthquakes display a remarkable periodicity of 420 days, which can tentatively be explained as an effect of cyclic stress variations produced on seismogenetic structures by the Earth’s free nutation process (Chandler wobble).
