Abstract

Internal angular momentum transport processes are necessary to allow a gaseous disk to accrete onto the central object. For some astrophysical objects (cataclysmic variables, protostars) estimates of the efficiency of these processes are available from observed time scales. These estimates give different results, and it may well be that different processes are responsible for the angular momentum transport in different circumstances. One such process is transport by systems of global spiral shaped shock waves, proposed by Donner (1979), Michel (1984), Sawada et al. (1986), and Spruit (1987). Before discussing this in more detail, and in order to put it into perspective, I first review two other promising transport processes.
