Abstract
Trophoblastic disease originates from the placental villi and possesses the following features:

1.
The paternal genes are inherited, and from the standpoint of graft immunity the disease has the characteristics of a homograft tumor.

2.
These tumors produce human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and the level of hCG is a valuable marker for diagnosis as well as for assessment of therapeutic effect and remission.

3.
Chemotherapy is very effective, and even metastatic cases may be cured by chemotherapy alone.

4.
The tumors apparently progress from hydatidiform mole to invasive mole to choriocarcinoma, and therfore by controlling the hydatidiform mole stage it is possible to detect early choriocarcinoma or even prevent its occurrence.
