Schon vor mehr als zehn Jahren erreichte die Diskussion um René THOMs Katastrophentheorie einen — von Kontroversen begleiteten — Höhepunkt. In diversen Wochenmagazinen (wie etwa dem Spiegel) wurde die Katastrophentheorie als ein Druchbruch gepriesen, der sich mit NEWTONs Werk messen könne.
