Behavioural, Morphological and Genetic Changes in Some North Atlantic Populations of the Barnacle Semibalanus Balanoides

Evolutionary Biogeography of the Marine Algae of the North Atlantic

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIG,volume 22))

Abstract

We use the intertidal barnacle Semibalanus balanoides as a model to examine geographical patterns of enzyme polymorphism in a cosmopolitan organism in the North Atlantic. On a smaller geographical scale, we focus on North American populations and show that behavioural, morphological and genetic differences occur between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the North Atlantic populations of Semibalanus. We discuss the possible role of selective environmental pressures (e.g. ice scouring), and relative isolation of the Gulf population, particularly in relation to differences in larval settling behaviour between the Gulf of St. Lawrence (where the animals are cryptic), and the open Atlantic coast (where settlement is greatest on exposed substrata). The factors considered are latitude, water circulation and possible past and present dispersal routes.
