Abstract

We are presently witnessing the rapid development of a new interdisciplinary research field: Neural networks for computing alias Neuroinformatics (see, e.g.: ECKMILLER, MALSBURG /1/). The concepts of brain function, cellular automata, artificial intelligence, synergetics, self-organization, spin-glasses, and complex network topology are being merged in order to develop new information processing hardware as well as software. This attempt to transfer concepts of brain function to artificial neural nets for the design of neural computers demands several radical changes in the approach:

  1. a)

The development of software for serial computers is being replaced by an iterative interaction between neural net topology and learning rules for self-organization; and

  2. b)

Algorithmic representations of desired functions are gradually being replaced by geometrical representations in neural nets with multi-layered or otherwise highly ordered flexible topologies.
