Abstract

This paper aims to introduce the reader to the Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM [1]) standard and to put it in the context of the development of standards for computer graphics. Hie papers presented at the workshop which are included in this volume are concerned with the use of the standard and address different aspects of the CGM as their starting point.
