Abstract

Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) are chemically formed superlattices which can show extremely small interlayer interaction and correlation. These compounds provide good experimental evidence for quasi-two dimensional structural and magnetic phase transitions. An example of a commensurate-incommensurate structural phase transition is presented. A review is given of the evidence for 2D magnetism in graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) with particular reference to the possible 2D-XY phase transition in CoC12-GICs.
