Abstract
When implementing GKS in some kind of a software environment, one is faced, sooner or later, with a major practical problem: the extreme diversity of the currently available graphic devices. If the implementor chooses the thorny path of entering the software market with a new GKS implementation, the demand for newer and newer device drivers (i.e. workstations, in GKS terminology) is steadily growing. Devices are different in local processing capabilities, in precision, in their way of coding, one has rich possibilities for text drawing but cannot do area filling, while the other one is just the opposite.
