Abstract

The Golgi apparatus is a crossroad in intracellular traffic; it is a crucial stage in the pathways of newly synthesized as well as internalized and recycling molecules. Having been transported to the Golgi apparatus by vesicular carriers or via membrane continuities, molecules are taken up into and possibly traverse the Golgi complex. Elements of the Golgi apparatus are the sites where molecules of various origin and destination are subjected to multiple modifications, such as proteolytic cleavage, glycosylation, phosphorylation, and sulfation, and from where they subsequently are targeted to diverse cellular locations.
