Abstract

The findings of Noyes [2] and Markolf [21, 22] have shown the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) to be the primary stabilizer against anterior subluxation of the tibia, and to be effective regardless of the degree of flexion. It is also a stabilizer in limiting internal as well as external rotation (IR, ER). The two cruciates are intimately linked with the shape of the femoral condyles. This can be represented by the model of the “four bars crossed linkage” by Menschik and Muller [23]. The degree of harmonious gliding and rolling varies according to the flexion angle throughout the entire range of motion [9, 16, 23]. The lateral tibial plateau is convex (Figs. 1, 2). Its summit is posterior to the summit of convexity of the lateral condyle[16].
