Abstract

A feldspar containing only the Ab, An, Cn and Or components is colorless. The color of a feldspar can arise either from a chemical substitution in the crystal structure (e.g. trivalent iron), or from light scattering from discrete impurities (e.g. hematite): in addition some feldspars show iridescence caused by diffraction effects at multiple internal boundaries (Chap. 19). Lehmann (1978, 1981) reviewed the color and color centers of minerals and their causes, and Hofmeister and Rossman (1983) gave a thorough description of the color of feldspars based on existing literature (1, 556-58) and new measurements.
