Abstract
Early in the 1970s it was thought that rotator cuff disease would parallel and be proportional to the degree of intraarticular cartilage disease in patients requiring shoulder replacement surgery. In line with this thought, in the early 1970s we used the Bickel and the Stanmore implants, anticipating significant rotator cuff disease. In 1975 we reviewed our experience with these implants and made two observations:
-
1.
Tears of the rotator cuff were much less frequent than we expected.
-
2.
Reoperations with these implants were common, approaching 50% with very short follow-up.
