Abstract

Medical science organizations and experts have repeatedly drawn up recommenda-tions for antihypertensive drug therapy. The currently valid stepped-care approach of the American Joint National Committee on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure [15] and the German League against Hypertension [3] agree in recommending diuretics and beta blockers as the treatment of choice in hypertension. The question arises: What are the criteria that should be applied for selecting the initial antihypertensive agents and for the sequence of combining such drugs?
